Nathan Loos
Founder & Math TutorI founded Rising Stars because I love having a positive impact on people’s lives. I teach math from Grade 9 through Calculus II, statistics up to introductory university courses, and business classes from high school entrepreneurship and finance to university. My sessions are calm and grounded, but I don’t take things too seriously. We have fun, and you can just be yourself.

What sessions with me are like
I’m calm and grounded, but I don’t take things too seriously. I like to have fun during our sessions and create a relaxed, comfortable environment where you feel like you can be yourself.
Getting ready for the test, not just the homework
I want you to understand how to deal with test situations, not just the material. Before a test, we practice the way you’ll actually be tested.
Subjects and course ranges
Each subject I teach, from the lowest to the highest level.
Background and why I tutor
Where I’m coming from
I have a business degree from UVic, along with a background in psychology and computer science, also from UVic.
I have four years of tutoring experience through Rising Stars, and I worked as a high school and middle school math and science teacher at Arts Calibre for a year.
What keeps me teaching
I love being able to have a positive impact on people’s lives. That’s why I built the business in the first place. Helping someone through a difficult class so they can pursue what they’re passionate about, or helping them discover their own passion for a subject, is what drives me.
Beyond the next test, I want students to develop their own independence and know how to approach unfamiliar questions.
When I’m not teaching
I love playing Magic: The Gathering, along with puzzle and strategy games, both board games and video games. I want to get into escape rooms more.
My favourite book is The Name of the Wind, but I’m starting to worry the third book will never come out. Game of Thrones is one of my favourite TV shows and book series.
I love mushroom foraging, although I’m still new to it.
