Madi Mobach

Math and Chemistry Tutor · Chemistry, Math & Calculus

I'm working on a BSc Honours in Chemistry with a minor in Mathematics at UVic. I tutor chemistry from Grade 11 to second-year university, and math from Pre-Calculus 11 to Calculus I. My sessions are structured but casual, and I like showing students that these subjects can be fun and useful, even when they're difficult.

How I teach

What sessions with me are like

My sessions are structured but casual. We follow a clear plan, and you can relax enough to ask anything.

★
Structured, but casual Each session has a purpose and a plan, without feeling stiff or formal.
★
Saying what doesn't make sense I help you practise communicating where you're struggling to grasp a concept, or which part of an explanation doesn't make sense.
★
Skills that carry over Along with the course material, we work on transferable skills like time management and communication.
Test and exam preparation

Getting ready for the test, not just the homework

Before a test, I identify and focus on your struggle areas so we can get ahead of mistakes before they cost you marks.

★
Find your struggle areas We pinpoint the topics and question types that trip you up.
★
Get ahead of mistakes We spend our time where it matters most, so those areas are solid before test day.
★
Timed practice when needed If pacing is the problem, we practise against the clock.

Background and why I tutor

Education and experience

Where I'm coming from

I'm completing a BSc Honours in Chemistry with a minor in Mathematics at the University of Victoria.

For a year and counting, I've been a review session tutor through UVic's Chemistry Undergraduate Student Society, working with first- and second-year students in CHEM 101, 225 and 231.

I especially enjoy first-year chemistry, because that was the course that made me want to be a chemistry major.

Why I tutor

What keeps me teaching

I tutor because I know the two subjects that make up my bachelor's degree, chemistry and math, get a bad rep. I want to show students that even if they are difficult, these subjects can be fun and useful.

I enjoy showing students that math shows up everywhere. Learning how numbers interact and behave is more like learning a new language, one that lets you take in and understand more of the world.

Beyond the current test, I hope students take away transferable skills like time management and communication.

Experiencing live music is one of my favourite activities. I'm at concerts as often as I can be, and I'll even travel to other countries to get there!
