How I teach

What sessions with me are like

I focus on calm, structured learning. I make sure you know how to tackle homework and midterm problems, and when time permits, that you deeply understand the concepts and foundations behind them.

★
A judgment-free space Learning is much easier when you feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes, so I keep sessions supportive and judgment-free.
★
No direct answers I avoid handing over answers. I want you to get into the habit of exploring a problem on your own, so you learn to think like a mathematician and trust your own reasoning.
★
Good study habits I guide you toward study habits that work for you, whether that's an hour a day on one class, practice problems every week, or reviewing material before a lecture.

My goal is not only to help you improve your grades, but also to help you become a more confident and independent learner.

Test and exam preparation

Getting ready for the test, not just the homework

Before a test, we plan first, then build up to working under real conditions.

★
Plan and organize We plan the first steps and organize all the concepts into a flow chart, so you can see how they connect.
★
Tackle practice problems We work through practice problems together until the first few questions feel comfortable.
★
Timed sessions Once you're comfortable, we move to timed practice.
★
Common mistakes We go over common mistakes, and any concept that hasn't clicked yet.

A little more about me

Background and why I tutor

Education and experience

Where I'm coming from

I have a Bachelor of Science in combined Mathematics and Statistics.

I've been a teaching assistant for Calculus I to IV and a marker for Calculus I in UVic's Department of Mathematics and Statistics. I've also tutored math for K–12 students at Mathnasium Learning Center, and worked as a private tutor in students' homes with Grade 9 to Grade 11 math.

I love teaching Calculus I and Pre-Calculus. Students struggle most in these classes, but the concepts aren't hard. What I love teaching is how to structure your thinking, and how ideas like limits, derivatives and integrals link up to one another. With a little structured guidance, students can do really well in these classes.

Why I tutor

What keeps me teaching

I tutor because I really like math as a subject. It's known to be unlikable, but I believe that with the right teacher, one who can guide a student well and adapt to their needs, the content becomes more fun and challenging than simply difficult.

I also like working with students, hearing their ideas and the way their brains work. I find myself learning from my students, which is very rewarding.

Overall, I love being in a leadership role where I get to help people, and I find a lot of joy in that.

Outside tutoring

When I'm not teaching

★

I love watching true crime television, and I've binge-watched almost all of it on Netflix.

★

I like watching hockey with friends.

★

I love going on a good nature walk or hike.
