JJ
Math and Science TutorMy teaching style is encouraging, patient, and flexible. I teach math and science for Grades 7 to 12, and I like breaking concepts down into manageable steps in a space where students feel safe asking questions, making mistakes, and working through challenges without feeling judged.

What sessions with me are like
I want students to feel supported while still being challenged to think for themselves.
I want our sessions to feel like a collaborative process where students can ask questions, build skills at their own pace, and develop confidence in their ability to learn.
Getting ready for the test, not just the homework
I start by identifying what you already understand and which areas need more practice. From there, we review key concepts, try examples together, and gradually work toward independent practice.
Beyond the next test, I hope students leave with stronger foundational skills, more confidence in their abilities, and a better understanding of how they learn. Struggling with a concept is a key part of the learning process, and my goal is to help students become more capable and independent learners over time.
Subjects and course ranges
I especially enjoy biology and helping students understand the science behind how the world works. In math, I love breaking down challenging problems into manageable steps and building confidence with fractions, BEDMAS and algebra.
Background and why I tutor
Where I’m coming from
I’m a recent Bachelor of Education graduate (Intermediate/Senior) from Nipissing University, with teachables in Biology and Social Sciences. I also hold a Bachelor of Science in Psychology, Neuroscience & Behaviour from McMaster University.
I completed teaching practicums in Grades 7 to 12, teaching science, biology and math. I planned and delivered lessons, supported diverse learning needs, adapted materials for individual students, and developed hands-on, inquiry-based activities.
I started tutoring with Rising Stars in May 2026, supporting students in Grades 9 to 11 math and Grades 10 to 11 science, including foundational math skills, Workplace Mathematics, chemistry and biology. Before that, I worked as a summer camp program leader and after-school care educator.
What keeps me teaching
I love helping students work through something that initially feels confusing and seeing the “aha” moment when everything starts to click.
Everyone learns differently. My job is to figure out what works best for each student, and when we crack that code together, learning becomes so much more fun. When students come to our sessions, I want them to feel supported, capable, and confident in their learning.
When I’m not teaching
I stay active through sports like ultimate frisbee and hockey.
I love spending time outdoors exploring nature.
I enjoy music and playing guitar, and hanging out with my cat.
